ZvX Basic Zerg Fundamentals – Hotkeying

Everyone uses hotkeys, but we don’t all use them as quickly or efficiently as possible.  Most zerg players know that to manually click every action takes too long, which is why we hotkey hatcheries so you can simplypress something like “4sd” to build a drone.   Being able to quickly hotkey units and buildings to a control group ranks among the most important SC2 mechanics, especially for Zerg players who can actually hotkey morphing eggs into their main army control group.  For example, assume you use 1 as your main army control group and you just built 4 sets of lings that you want to add to the control group.   If you press 1 to select your main army, hold SHIFT and CONTROL then left click one of the 4 eggs – now you have all your units AND your eggs selected, so just press CONTROL-1 to add them to the control group.  The faster you can do this, the more time you have to perform other actions!

Building new Zerglings? Learn how to add them to the control group immediately for convenience and saved time.  A helpful drill:  In the early stages when you’re not too busy, use a random control group (2 or 3) and start adding every new drone into the control group.  So when you get to 10 supply, you should have 10 drones in the control group.

Hey Tang. I don’t understand why you do it so complicated. I do it this way:
I have my Lings in Control Group 1; I select Larva and make some Lings; Now I Ctrl-click the eggs in my wire-frame (unless all larvae were morphed to eggs); Now I simply press Shift + 1 to add the eggs to Control Group 1. GG!

Hey Tang, from what I understand, there’s a faster way to add eggs to your army. After you start morphing your units, press CTRL and click on an egg AND THEN press SHIFT + 1 (or whatever you use). From what I understand, you’re saying to select your army and your eggs, then recreate the control group, which is inefficient.

Thanks for commenting, guys – it’s absolutely a mistake that I left this out of the video! I don’t think the method you mention is necessarily more efficient because it’s either:

Press 1, Select the eggs, then Control-1 which leaves you selecting all your units
    or
Select the eggs, Press Shift-1, then Press 1 to select all your units.

You are right. Unless you instantly hotkey your eggs. This will blow your mind.

      Select hatch.
      Make units.
      shift 1.
Done. (In case this didn’t already blow your mind, this means that any noob could do this off 10 bases in the middle of a micro battle, check it out.
